Score Layer 1 — Venue baseline (the anchor score from 3+ seasons of IPL data): The first and most important score-building layer is the venue-specific IPL powerplay baseline — the statistically verified average session score at this specific venue across 3+ seasons of IPL matches. Chepauk baseline: 44.2 (±2.8 standard deviation), calculated from 47 IPL powerplay sessions between 2021–2024. Eden Gardens baseline: 48.7 (±3.1). Wankhede: 52.4 (±3.4). This is the anchor score — the number around which all subsequent layers apply adjustments. Without a verified venue baseline, all subsequent layers rest on a floating foundation. The baseline is the score's bedrock.
Score Layer 2 — Pitch tier adjustment (the surface modifier from −6 to +2.5 runs): The second score-building layer is the pitch tier adjustment: how much does today's specific pitch surface condition shift the expected score from the venue baseline? Tier 1 (exceptional batting surface): +2.5. Tier 2 (good batting): +0. Tier 3 (slightly dry/worn): −1.0. Tier 4 (dry, turning): −3.5. Tier 5 (heavily deteriorated): −6.0. Today at Chepauk (Tier 4): 44.2 − 3.5 = 40.7 expected. The pitch tier is the most powerful single-match score modifier — a Tier 1 vs Tier 5 surface at the same venue produces a 8.5-run difference in expected score (16–19% of baseline). The pitch tier is also the most reliably verified layer: the curator's report provides specific language that maps directly to the tier classifications.
Score Layer 3 — Squad depth score (the batting lineup modifier from −2 to +2 runs): The third score-building layer is the squad composition adjustment: how does today's specific XI batting lineup compare to the baseline's assumed average lineup? The squad depth score quantifies three factors: opener quality (impact batters vs defensive openers), available depth (8-deep batting order vs 5-deep), and absence of key players (main striker rested or injured). At Chepauk with MI's full XI (KL Rahul opening, Rohit Sharma at 2): +1.5 squad premium. At Chepauk with MI missing both openers (rotation): −1.0 squad discount. Today's squad score: +0.5 (KL Rahul present, Hardik Pandya absent). Expected score with squad: 40.7 + 0.5 = 41.2.
Score Layer 4 — Conditions adjustment (the atmospheric modifier from −2 to +1.5 runs): The fourth score-building layer is the atmospheric conditions adjustment: how do today's specific conditions — humidity, dew likelihood, wind speed, temperature — shift the expected score from the pitch-adjusted baseline? At coastal venues (Chepauk, Wankhede, Chinnaswamy), evening dew is the dominant conditions factor: when dew appears after the 15th over, the pitch loses its grip and spinners become ineffective — particularly in the second innings powerplay where the ball becomes difficult to control.
