An estimated baseline introduces a systematic error that can be positive or negative: the estimated Chepauk baseline of ~48 might be 3.8 runs above the actual 44.2 — producing a systematically negative expected value in every Chepauk powerplay bet (you think you have a 10% deviation when you actually have a 2% deviation, below the overround threshold). Only verified baselines keep the expected value calculation on the plus side.
Plus Standard 2 — Plus deviation (above threshold, not at or below): The second plus standard: only bet when the deviation is genuinely on the plus side of the threshold — above 5% raw (and above 8% when overround is accounted for), not at 5% (zero genuine EV after overround), not below 5% (negative EV). The plus bettor's rule: 4.9% = below threshold = NO-BET (negative EV after overround). 5.1% = above threshold but marginal = 1-unit minimum. 10%+ = well above threshold = 3-unit maximum. Only deviations that are clearly on the plus side of the working threshold are actionable.
Plus Standard 3 — Plus stake (correct for the edge, neither more nor less): The third plus standard: the stake must be on the plus side of the stake sizing scale — neither too large (which introduces ruin risk, turning a plus-EV session into a minus-EV season) nor too small (which leaves positive expected value on the table). The correct stake for a 15.4% deviation is 3 units — 3.1 units is above the cap (introduces ruin risk), 2.9 units is below optimal (leaves expected return unrealised). The plus stake precisely matches the edge: the amount staked is the amount that maximises the season's expected return without introducing the ruin risk that turns plus into minus.
Plus Standard 4 — Plus record (reviewed, not forgotten): The fourth plus standard: the analytical record must be on the plus side of the completeness scale — reviewed, documented, and available for calibration. An unreviewed match is a minus: the model improvement insight that would have come from the review is permanently lost. A reviewed match is a plus: the model note (even if "no model update needed — process confirmed") maintains the model on the plus side of the calibration scale. The plus record is the accumulation of all reviewed matches — the foundation on which the plus baseline (Standard 1) is verified and recalibrated each season.
